The world has TONS of yoga stuff to sell you and, truth be told, you don’t need most of it. One essential is the mat, but not all are created equal. I typically recommend grabbing something inexpensive and giving it a test drive. Usually, the things that you don’t like about that first mat help you to find (and justify splurging a bit on) an upgrade, when it’s time.

Here are a few things to think about when you are shopping for a mat:

  • Do you get sweaty? No shame, I am a lifetime member of the sweaty palms club. Search for a “grippy” or “nonslip” mat, something that won’t have your hands and feet slipping around in your downward facing dog.
  • Are you tall? Look for an extra long mat, to give you more room to stretch out.
  • How much cushion do you want underneath you? A thicker yoga mat is nice for reclining poses or tender knees.  Thicker mats (think gym mats) are a little tricky to balance on, if you have a more active yoga practice.

While you are browsing, there are some other things that are nice to have around for a yoga class:

  • A yoga strap and blocks: These are great for stretching and supporting the body, as well as modifying traditional poses to make them work for you.  Not ready to invest? Grab a bathrobe strap, and a big towel and you are set.
  • A bolster: It’s like a regular pillow, but better. They are great to sit on, especially if sitting on the floor isn’t your favorite. They feel awesome to stretch over and come in really handy when it’s time to lie down and get comfy at the end of class. No bolster? Pile up 3-4  blankets. About those…
  • A blanket:  A thick, sturdy blanket is just the thing for modifying poses on the floor or cushioning tender joints.
